QUASI-DOMESTIC SPACE IN JAPAN

Art Gallery Exhibition, 2019 // University of Michigan, Taubman Gallery

Quasi-Domestic Space in Japan was an installation exhibition as part of exhibition series at Taubman Gallery. The research derived from a study abroad program in Japan. The team spent a month in Japan studying and researching the culture. Afterwards, we analyzed the observation made during our time and created a hypothesis based on the insights. The exhibition showed two different types of spaces popular in Japan that have both what is traditionally considered as a “domestic” space in Western culture within a “commercial” setting. We observed that the “domestic” elements have seeped into public spaces in Japan and created what we termed as “Quasi-domestic space”. The exhibition provided a curated experience of these spaces at Taubman Gallery.

MULTI-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL

Residential // Los Angeles, CA

This project was for a multi-family housing located on Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park. I was part of the research team that analyzed the neighborhood of the project and provided a design direction and concept that would relate to the site and the proposed typology of project. We started by collecting articles, recording our observations during our site visit, and collectively creating a context map that would ultimately help us organize our insights and provide a design direction that could help to position the project and drive the design concept and decisions.
